Week 5: The Two Types of Fear
Share
"The greatest remedy for anger is delay."
(Seneca)
The Essence
Seneca considers anger to be a short-term madness. Reacting immediately gives anger control over your reason. The delay is the space between stimulus and response that we must use to restore reason. Anger is not natural, but a self-chosen reaction that we can actively avoid by pausing.
Takeaway
Never decide in anger. Give your reason a chance to return.
Application in Daily Life
- The 5-Breath Rule: When feeling anger, take five slow, deep breaths before you speak or act.
- The "External Cause" Check: Immediately ask: "Will my reaction harm the original cause more, or myself/my relationships?" (Usually the latter ).
- The Perspective Shift: Imagine how ridiculous your reaction would look from a distance of ten years.
